Job Title: Temporary On-Call Kitchen Helper
Position Type: Temporary / On-Call
Department: Nutrition Services
Reports To: Culinary Director
Pay Range: $15–$20 per hour (based on experience)
Position Summary:
The Temporary On-Call Kitchen Helper provides essential support to the Nutrition Services team to ensure efficient daily kitchen operations. This role assists with meal preparation, packaging, sanitation, and service support for both Congregate Meal Programs and Meals on Wheels delivery operations. The ideal candidate is dependable, flexible, and committed to supporting older adults through quality nutrition services.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with food preparation tasks such as washing, peeling, chopping, and portioning ingredients
- Support meal production for Congregate Dining and Meals on Wheels services
- Assemble, tray, and package meals according to program guidelines
- Prepare kitchen and serving areas for daily meal service
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen workspaces and equipment
- Wash dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and kitchen tools
- Follow all food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations
- Assist with stocking, organizing, and rotating food and kitchen supplies
- Provide coverage during staff absences or periods of increased meal demand
- Perform other duties as assigned to support nutrition operations
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- ServSafe Food Handler Certificate required
- Previous kitchen or food service experience preferred
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Strong attention to cleanliness, safety, and detail
- Dependable and punctual, with the ability to respond to short-notice scheduling needs
- Ability to lift up to 30–40 pounds and stand for extended periods
- Must be able to pass a background check
Schedule & Work Environment
- On-call position; hours vary based on operational needs
- Typical shifts may range from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
- Work performed in a commercial kitchen environment with exposure to heat, cold, and food allergens
Physical Requirements
- Standing, walking, bending, and lifting throughout the shift
- Ability to safely operate kitchen equipment and handle food supplies
